The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, also known as the Green Card Lottery, is an annual program run by the U.S. Department of State.
If you applied for the DV Lottery, you can check the status of your application online using the Entrant Status Check on the Department of State’s website. The Entrant Status Check will be available from May 5 to September 30 of the year following the DV Lottery. For example, if you applied for the 2022 DV Lottery, you will be able to check your status from May 5, 2023 to September 30, 2023.
To use the Entrant Status Check, you will need to enter your confirmation number, which is provided to you when you complete the online application form, as well as your personal identification number (PIN). If you are selected for the DV Lottery, you will be notified through the Entrant Status Check.
It’s important to note that the DV Lottery is a very competitive program, and the chances of being selected are quite low. In recent years, the Department of State has received millions of applications for the DV Lottery, and only a small percentage of applicants are selected. If you are not selected, you will need to reapply in the following year’s DV Lottery.
Why do people apply for a green card?
A green card, also known as a permanent resident card, is a document that allows a person to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis. There are many reasons why people may apply for a green card, including:
- Employment: Many people apply for a green card because they have been offered a job in the United States. In order to work in the U.S., non-citizens must obtain a green card or another type of work visa.
- Family: Some people apply for a green card because they have family members who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. For example, a spouse or child of a U.S. citizen may be eligible to apply for a green card.
- Education: People apply for a green card because they want to study in the United States. In order to study in the U.S., non-citizens must obtain a student visa or a green card.
- Asylees and refugees: Some people apply for a green card because they have been granted asylum or refugee status in the United States. Asylees and refugees are individuals who have been persecuted or have a well-founded fear of persecution in their home countries, and have been granted permission to live in the U.S. on a permanent basis.
- Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery: The U.S. Department of State runs an annual program called the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, which makes 50,000 diversity visas available each year to individuals from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. If you are selected in the DV Lottery, you may apply for a green card.
